25 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Britain, which will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union on 1 July, today urged Iran's president-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to quickly address mounting concerns over Tehran's suspected nuclear program.
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said in a statement he hoped that under Ahmadinejads' presidency "Iran will take early steps to address international concerns about its nuclear program."
Straw also said Britain would work hard with its EU partners and bilaterally to encourage Tehran to take steps in that direction.
The United States suspects that Iran is working toward building a nuclear arsenal. Tehran denies the charge.
The European Union has been trying to find a solution to the standoff for the past few months.
