Former Iraqi Premier Urges Cooperation With Syria

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi (file photo) 27 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Former Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says his country has no quarrel with Syria and is hopeful about improving cooperation along their shared frontiers.
Allawi was speaking at a news conference following talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The United States has accused Syria of failing to prevent insurgents from using its territory to illegally enter Iraq. But Allawi said those insurgents "are not necessarily doing so with support from the Syrian government." Allawi said that Iraq should improve political and military cooperation with Syria to better regulate security along their border.
