28 June 2005 (RFE/RL) --A Iraqi member of parliament, 87-year-old Dhari Ali al-Fayadh, three of his bodyguards, and his son were killed today by a car-bomb attack on their convoy in the north of the capital Baghdad.
South of Baghdad, a suicide bomber killed three people and blew himself up in a hospital in the town of Al-Musayyib.
And the U.S. military says a marine and a sailor, both women, were confirmed killed along with four other marines in a suicide bombing in Al-Fallujah on 23 June.
Today also is the first anniversary of the transfer of formal sovereignty from the United States-led coalition to an Iraqi government.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said on 27 June that he believes two more years will be "more than enough" time for security to be established in Iraq.
U.S. President George W. Bush is due to deliver what his aides say will be a major speech on Iraq later today.
In another development, Syria is sending an official delegation to Iraq today to prepare the reopening of the Syrian Embassy in Baghdad after 20 years.
