Still No Official Count In Albania Poll

7 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Albania continues to delay announcing the results of the country's 3 July parliamentary elections.
The Central Election Commission said yesterday that the country's opposition Democratic Party won, but with insufficient seats in parliament to form a government alone. The commission said, however, that it cannot certify an official result until a number of challenges are resolved.

Today, Albanian President Alfred Moisiu appealed to political parties to stop interfering with parliamentary election vote counting, which is in its fifth day.

Final results were initially scheduled to be released on 11 July.

Election Commission spokesman Erton Sinani now says the announcement will be made on 8 July.

Before the poll, Moisu had said that how the elections were conducted would be more important than who got elected. Moisiu said Albania would be the real winner if it demonstrated it could conduct a free and fair election.
