Mideast States Condemn Egyptian Diplomat Execution

Ihab al-Sharif 8 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Middle Eastern governments have been speaking out in condemnation of the execution in Iraq of Egypt's top diplomat.
Al-Qaeda's network in Iraq said on 7 July it had killed Ihab al-Sharif, five days after he was kidnapped in Baghdad. The Egyptian government has since confirmed the report.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Assefi, quoted on Iran's state news agency, IRNA, said on 8 July that such terrorist methods would not help any political cause or the Iraqi people.

In Israel, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said the killing illustrates the need for international cooperation to combat what he called the "cruelty of terrorism."

The Palestinian Authority also condemned the killing and sent condolences to al-Sharif's family.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz said the killing was a terrorist act bearing no relation to Islam.
