8 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A top Russian official says that he will ask Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Governor Roman Abramovich to stay on as governor for a second term.
Konstantin Pulikovskii, the presidential envoy to the Russia's Far East, made the announcement today.
He also said that eight candidates are competing for the post.
Abramovich lives in London, where he spends much of his time following the Chelsea football club, which he owns.
Abramovich's term in office as the governor of Chukotka expires in December.
Recent reforms scrapped elections for Russia's regional governors.
It's now President Vladimir Putin who puts forward his candidate for approval by the local parliament.
