Afghan Insurgents Say U.S. Soldier Beheaded

Prisoners at Bagram Air Base on 9 July 9 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Taliban insurgents claimed today to have beheaded an American commando missing for over a week in Afghanistan's mountainous Kunar Province in the country's east.
The U.S. military says it has no information to support the claim.

The elite Navy SEAL commando has been missing since a clash with insurgents on 28 June.

Officials said 15 Afghan police officers are missing in southern Afghanistan after militants attacked their convoy.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said they had killed six police officers and taken seven others hostage. The claim could not be independently verified.

Also on 9 July, the U.S. military released 76 Afghan prisoners held at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul. Officials said the move is part of ongoing efforts to promote national reconciliation.
