12 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Clashes between students and police occurred today in front of Tehran University during a demonstration against the imprisonment of an Iranian dissident, Akbar Ganji, Radio Farda reported.
Student protesters, demanding the release of Ganji and other political prisoners, clashed with police who were trying to disperse the demonstration.
Ganji’s wife, Massoumeh Shafii, today told RFE/RL that her husband is in critical condition as a result of a month-long hunger strike.
In 2000, Ganji was sentenced to six years in jail for publicly criticizing the Iranian authorities.
