France Reintroduces Border Controls With EU

13 July 2005 -- French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy announced today that France has activated a clause in the Schengen open-borders agreement enabling the country to reintroduce border controls within the European Union.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of EU interior ministers, Sarkozy said the move was necessary after last week's bombings in London.

France has used the clause before, mostly for major sporting and political events.
