25 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Authorities in Russia's Far East seized more than 24 metric tons of illegally caught salmon over the weekend in Kamchatka Oblast.
The press service for the Kamchatka regional Interior Ministry said the largest single haul was confiscated from a truck driver who was transporting 18.7 metric tons of salmon without the required documentation outside the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, about 6,700 kilometers east of Moscow.
The seizure comes amid an ongoing anti-poaching campaign by law enforcement in Russia's Far East, where illegal fishing is rampant.
More than three dozen criminal investigations are under way, with more than 240 people facing charges, according to the Interior Ministry.
