Raid In Southern Afghanistan Nets Militants

26 July 2005 -- Uruzgan Province Governor Jan Mohammad Khan has said at least 40 suspected militants were killed yesterday in fighting with U.S. and Afghan forces in southern Afghanistan.
Mohammad Khan said the fighting came during a raid on a suspected Taliban hideout late yesterday evening.

An unidentified U.S. military spokeswoman said she had no details about the incident.

There has been an upsurge in violence ahead of Afghanistan's September parliamentary elections.

In fighting yesterday, militants attacked a U.S.-Afghan patrol in southern Uruzgan, setting off a gun battle that resulted in the deaths of one U.S. and one Afghan soldier, as well as 11 militants.
