Pakistan Considers Law On 'Islamic Values'

1 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The Pakistani Supreme Court is due to resume hearing a petition today against a proposed law seeking to set up a morality police in a northwestern province.
A coalition of radical Islamic groups that rules the North-West Frontier Province has approved an "Accountability Act" that would establish a department to ensure adherence to "Islamic values in public places."

President General Pervez Musharraf has warned the legislation would take away people's freedoms.

The opposition has denounced the proposed law, comparing it to the rule of the former Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan
