Iraq Constitution Committee Head Says Deadline To Be Met

1 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The head of the committee drafting Iraq's new constitution, Human Hamudi, says a draft of the document will be ready by a 15 August deadline.
Hamudi told parliament today that only one chapter of the document remained to be written and he expected it would be completed in the next 10 days or so.

If any points of disagreement remain, however, he suggested the National Assembly resolve them.

Differences currently remain among the Sunni Arab, Shiite, and Kurdish factions on issues including federalism, the role of Islam, distribution of national wealth and the name of the country.

Iraqi and U.S. officials have insisted the 15 August deadline for parliament to approve the draft charter be met.
