11 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The United States has welcomed the arrest in Argentina of suspected Bosnian Serb war criminal Milan Lukic, and urged Balkan states to press their efforts to bring others to justice.
The statement was made late on 10 August by U.S. State Department Spokesman Adam Ereli.
Ereli reiterated the U.S. appeal to authorities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia and Montenegro to help bring all suspected war criminals to trial. He said this includes former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, his military commander Ratko Mladic, and former Croatian general Ante Gotovina.
Lukic was arrested Monday in Buenos Aires at the request of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
He has agreed to be extradited to The Hague to face charges of involvement in the 1992 killings of more than 130 Bosnian Muslims in the eastern Bosnian town of Visegrad during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.
