11 August 2005 -- The UN Security Council today extended the mandate of the UN mission in Iraq by another year.
The council voted unanimously to renew the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which was due to expire tomorrow.
UNAMI was set up by Security Council resolution No. 1,500 in August 2003. It has 344 international civilian personnel and 472 local staff.
The new U.S. Ambassador John Bolton welcomed the decision, saying it was a positive sign for developments in Iraq and for cooperation in the Security Council.
