Bird Flu Strikes Sixth Russian Region

15 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Russia today reported an outbreak of bird flu in the Urals region of Chelyabinsk Oblast.
Chelyabinsk Oblast is now the sixth region in Russia to have been struck by the virus since mid-July.

Oblast First Deputy Governor Andrei Gasilov said 60 bird-flu deaths were recorded in the village of Oktyabrskoe on 13 August.

Some 400 domestic fowl were then culled, to try to prevent a further spread of the disease.
