22 August 2005 -- Rescue teams in Russia's Caucasus have ended their search for two Polish mountain climbers trapped in an ice crevice and presumed dead.
The two were part of a four-man Polish team that fell into a crevice last week while scaling Mount Ushba in Kabardino-Balkaria.
Two of the Poles managed to climb out of the crevice, but the other two couldn't as they were trapped by a large piece of ice.
Interfax said Russian rescuers were calling off their search due to the high risk of the operation.
