27 August 2005 -- The U.S. military says an American soldier was killed and four more wounded in a bomb attack in southeastern Afghanistan.
The military said in a statement that the soldiers were patrolling in southeastern Afghanistan's restive Paktika Province when a roadside bomb hit their armored vehicle.
The incident comes less than a week after four U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded in a similar attack in the southern Zabul Province.
The statement said the U.S. soldiers were part of a combat patrol targeting rebels to provide a stable environment for the upcoming elections on 18 September.
This has been the bloodiest year in Afghanistan since 2001, with almost 1,000 people killed so far in political violence.
