29 August 2005 (RFE/RL) - The U.S. military has confirmed that Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova is being treated in a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, western Germany.
A U.S. military spokeswoman in Heidelberg refused to disclose any details, saying that Kosovo authorities would inform the public of Rugova's condition.
Sixty-year-old Rugova was flown in from Kosovo on 27 August, reportedly suffering from a respiratory infection together with a bout of flu, which had confined him to his home over most of the past week.
Rugova, a moderate Kosovo Albanian leader, has held office in UN-administered Kosovo province since 2001, when NATO drove out Serbian forces.
