Iran has maintained it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes
5 September 2005 -- Russia's Foreign Ministry released a statement today saying Russia opposes referring Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear program.
The statement said Russia sees no reason to send the matter to the council so long as "the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is dealing actively and productively" with Iran on the issue of Tehran's nuclear program.
Britain, Germany, and France have been negotiating on behalf of the European Union with Iran. The three countries have said they may get involved in drafting a resolution demanding Iran be referred to the UN Security Council if Tehran does not stop uranium conversion before the IAEA meets on 19 September.
But in Iran, local media quoted the deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Saaidi, as saying that Tehran is fully prepared for whatever international consequences result from the continuation of its nuclear program.
He is quoted as saying that the Europeans should know that Iran will not make any concessions over its nuclear program and is prepared to face whatever threats the Europeans have in mind.
