8 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Two Russian cargo planes are heading to the United States carrying supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
A Russian Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman said the planes are carrying large tents, blankets, and some 10,000 food rations.
Meanwhile, U.S. President George W. Bush says he will ask Congress for more than $50 billion in extra emergency funding to deal with the aftermath of Katrina.
Amid fears of contamination, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has order police and soldiers to use force if needed to evacuate any people remaining in the city.
Police say some of the 10,000 people left in the city either can't or don't want to go.
The authorities say three people have died from contaminated floodwater.
As water is pumped out of New Orleans, the diminishing floodwaters are revealing dead bodies, raw sewage, fuel, and rusting vehicles -- 10 days after Hurricane Katrina hit.
