Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the UN should play a greater role in fighting terrorism
16 September 2005 -- The United Nations General Assembly concludes its three-day annual summit today, with global leaders urging the UN to play a bigger role on the world stage.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin and China's President Hu Jintao have made it clear that they want the UN to help coordinate the fight against terrorism.
Other leaders have urged more progress on the UN's Millennium Development Goals to slash poverty and illness by 2015. However, major differences remain over what to do and who should pay.
Calls for Security Council reform have also been a common refrain.
At the end of today's session, the General Assembly is expected to adopt a document that takes a step toward reforming the UN and adds new impetus to helping lift poor countries out of poverty.
