21 September 2005 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected today to continue reviewing a draft resolution by the European Union that would report Iran's nuclear program to the Security Council for possible economic sanctions.
Ali Larijani, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, yesterday said the Islamic Republic would have "no choice" but to "leave the framework" of the international nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty if what he called "the language of force" continues to be used.
Late yesterday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement that says China and Russia agree "the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear program is not irreversible, and there remains every possibility the problem can be resolved" within the framework of the UN nuclear watchdog agency.
Iran says its nuclear program is for generating electricity and adamantly denies U.S. and European Union allegations that it is attempting to secretly build a nuclear bomb.
