Taliban Militants Storm Southeast Afghan Prison

(file photo) 24 September 2005 -- Two people were killed overnight when Taliban militants tried unsuccessfully to storm a prison and police station in southeastern Afghanistan.
The attack occurred in the Ali-Sher district of Khost Province. Militants attacked the district headquarters with
rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons.

A prisoner was killed in the fighting and two soldiers were wounded. Police say they killed one militant during a separate
attack on a police station in Ali-Sher.

Khost Province has a long border with Pakistan. Afghan officials have accused militants of crossing the border from
Pakistan to launch attacks in Afghanistan, a charge Pakistan denies.
