2 November 2005 -- Azerbaijan's law enforcement agencies say they have made progress in an investigation into an alleged coup plot involving former cabinet ministers and government officials.
A statement says investigators have obtained evidence that Eldar Salayev, the former president of Azerbaijan's Academy of Sciences, is involved in the alleged coup attempt.
Salayev was detained last week. His son, Elman, is a deputy chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (ADP).
The statement also says former Health Minister Ali Insanov has confessed to funding the campaign of exiled ADP leader Rasul Quliyev.
Authorities say they have arrested up to 15 people in recent days on suspicion of plotting with Quliyev ahead of the 6 November legislative polls. But independent media and rights groups say the actual number of detainees is much higher.
Quliyev has denied having links with the alleged plotters.
