3 November 2005 -- Police in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan claimed today they killed a militant leader and detained eight other suspected militants in an operation near the Chechen border.
A spokesman for the local Interior Ministry said Makhach Mamashev was killed last night near the town of Khasavyurt. Police say Mamashev was killed after he put up armed resistance as police were trying to detain him.
He was wanted for attacks on police in at least two Chechen villages.
Daghestan has recently seen increased violence, some spilling over from neighboring Chechnya, some linked to feuds among criminal gangs.
