5 November 2005 -- Colleagues of a respected Islamic scholar in the Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkariya said today the scholar was missing after being questioned by security forces last night.
Ruslan Nakhushev is the director of a center for Islamic studies in Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkariya. His colleagues said Nakhushev called his office yesterday evening after being questioned by security agents and said he would be home soon.
Nakhushev did not come home and, when friends called his mobile phone, they heard an unfamiliar voice laughing before the phone was switched off.
The regional Federal Security Service said Nakhushev's departure from their headquarters was noted in the log book but they had no information about where Nakhushev went after he left their building.
Last month, militants attacked Nalchik. In the fighting that followed dozens of people were killed.
