17 November 2005 -- Two Kyrgyz citizens convicted in Russia on charges of promoting extremism have reportedly been deported to Kyrgyzstan.
Interfax news agency said Umid Abdullayev and Akramzhon Mamatkarimov were deported yesterday by order of a court in the Samara region. The report said they were barred from traveling to Russia for five years.
According to Interfax, Russian authorities said the men were members of Hizb-ut Tahrir, a group banned in Russia and several former Soviet republics in Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan. The group advocates the creation of an Islamic state in Central Asia but says it rejects violence.
The report did not say when the two men were convicted.
