Mohammad Wali, a spokesman for the provincial governor, told RFE/RL’s Afghan Service on 9 December that two police officers were also injured when dozens of suspected Islamic militants attacked the vehicle late on 8 December while it was on a routine operation:
"The police wanted to capture a person in the Baghnai district and bring him to the district office,” Wali said. “The Taliban ambushed them and killed two policemen and injured two."
Yousuf Ahmadi, who identified himself as a spokesman for the Taliban, told AFP that two Taliban fighters were injured in the ambush.
The Taliban -- ousted in a U.S.-led military offensive in late 2001-- continue to attack military and security forces in a bid to destabilise the U.S.-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
