EU Bans Chicken Imports From Ukraine

Ukrainian vets disinfect a farm in eastern Ukraine (epa) 13 December 2005 -- Ukrainian officials say the European Union has temporarily banned the import of domestic fowl and chicken meat from Ukraine following the outbreak of bird flu there.
Veterinary officials today said similar bans have been imposed by Russia and Kazakhstan.

Officials say more than 50,000 birds have been killed after the first outbreak of the disease was recorded nearly 10 days ago on Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula. Since then, the outbreak has spread to at least 12 villages and 10 other places, also located on the peninsula have reported mass bird deaths.

Ukrainian officials say they are waiting for results from a British laboratory on whether the virus is of the strain dangerous to humans. No human infections have been recorded in Ukraine.
