More Than 120 Dead In Iraq

(RFE/RL) 5 January 2006 -- In Iraq's bloodiest day in months, more than 120 people were killed today in attacks across the country.

In the worst incident, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a police recruitment center in the western city of Ramadi, killing at least 68 people and wounding more than 100 others.

Another suicide bomber detonated explosives in the southern city of Karbala, the location of some of the holiest sites for Shi’ite Muslims. More than 50 people were killed and nearly 100 wounded. Most were vendors or pilgrims coming back from prayers.

The U.S. military said seven of its troops were killed in two separate incidents. Five were killed by a roadside bomb as their convoy moved south of Baghdad. Two other soldiers and two civilians were killed by a roadside bomb near the southern city of Najaf.
