Annan Asks Iraq To Form Government Of National Reconciliation

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan (file) (CTK) 21 January 2006 -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called on Iraqi political parties to form a government of national reconciliation.
Annan's remarks come after Iraq's electoral commission released figures yesterday from last month's parliamentary election.

According to those figures, the Shi'ia United Iraqi Alliance took 128 of the 275 seats in parliament. But that's 10 short of an absolute majority. It will now need to build a coalition either with the Kurdish bloc or the main Sunni Arab groups in order to form a government.
