Protesters In Azerbaijan Allege Drunken Police Killed Three

(RFE/RL) 27 January 2006 -- Some 300 people today protested in Azerbaijan over alleged police lawlessness after three people were killed.
Protesters gathered in the town of Nardaran, on the outskirts of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. They were demonstrating against an incident that occurred there on 25 January in which three people -- two police officer and a civilian -- were killed.

The protesters believe that the police officers were drunk and disorderly and initiated the deadly firefight.

Local law enforcement authorities, however, say they are treating the incident as an ordinary criminal event.
