U.S. To Cancel Afghanistan's Debt

7 February 2006 -- The United States said today it is canceling Afghanistan's entire bilateral debt of $108 million under a deal struck with the Paris Club of creditor nations.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the U.S. action will be done through normal Paris Club procedures.

He said Russia, Germany, and other Paris Club creditors "also intend to provide 100 percent cancellation" to Afghanistan.
