Afghan Police Foil Attack On Shi'ite Shrine

In an earlier example of sectarian tensions in Afghanistan, police try to halt clashes between Shi'ites and Sunnis in Herat on February 9 (epa) March 21, 2006 -- Afghan police in Kabul have defused two bombs near a Shi'ite shrine where tens of thousands of people were gathering for the traditional Persian new year, Norouz.

Afghanistan's antiterrorism chief, General Abdul Manan Farahi, said police had identified those behind the attempted attack as Taliban insurgents but had not yet made any arrests.
