March 23, 2006 -- Three Western aid workers were freed today after being held hostage in Iraq for about four months.
The release was confirmed by British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw at a press conference in London.
"It is a huge tribute to the professionalism of the multinational forces and the Iraqi forces that they've been able to achieve this result," Straw said. "And it is a result of a team effort involving military and civilian personnel from a number of countries."
The two Canadians and one Briton were abducted in Baghdad in November 2005. Straw said the two Canadians required hospital treatment.
Meanwhile, a suicide car bomb exploded outside the headquarters of a police unit in Baghdad, killing as many as 15 people and wounding 32 others. Police said most of the casualties were policemen.
