U.S. Keeps Up Pressure On Iraq To Form Government

Zalmay Khalilzad (file photo) (AFP) March 26, 2006 -- The United States kept up its pressure on Iraq today to form a national-unity government.
In remarks in Baghdad, U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said it is "critical" for Iraqi parties to quickly form a coalition cabinet.

His comments came after two key U.S. senators, John McCain and Russ Feingold, also urged Iraqis to form a new government during a visit to Baghdad on March 25.

Talks on forming a government continued today at the residence of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani. He has said he remains optimistic that a government can be formed soon, three months after general elections.
