Christian Convert In Afghan Death Penalty Case Requests Asylum

Abdul Rahman in a Kabul court, March 23 (AFP) March 27, 2006 -- The UN says an Afghan facing the death penalty for converting to Christianity has asked to be given asylum outside the country.

It wasn't clear which country the convert, Abdul Rahman, would go to.

Rahman's fate is still unclear.

Meanwhile, Afghan prosecutors say they are awaiting results of a psychiatric test to determine whether to continue the case or dismiss it.

But the U.S. State Department says Rahman will soon be freed and arrangements are being made for his onward travel.

The case has drawn widespread critical attention and is being seen as a test of Afghanistan's commitment to basic human rights.
