Uzbekistan Jails Two Allegedly Extradited By Kazakhstan

Uzbek President Islam Karimov (file photo) (AFP) April 12, 2006 -- Uzbekistan has reportedly sentenced two men to six-year prison terms for being members of a banned Islamic group.

Surat Ikramov, head of the Initiative Group of Independent Human Rights Defenders of Uzbekistan, said the two were handed over by Kazakh authorities, despite protestations that their extraditions were illegal.

Kazakhstan denies handing over the men. Uzbek authorities say they were arrested in Uzbekistan.
