IAEA Says Iran Not Complying With UN

The head of the IAEA, Mohammad el-Baradei (file photo) (epa) April 28, 2006 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency says that Iran has failed to meet the UN Security Council's deadline to stop its uranium enrichment activities.

In a much-awaited report, the IAEA says Iran had not stopped enriching uranium by the April 28 deadline, and had not fully cooperated with UN inspectors trying to determine whether Iran's nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purpose.

While Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful, the United States accuses Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons.

The report has been sent to the UN Security Council.

In the hours before the report was issued, Iran remained defiant and said it would ignore international demands to halt its nuclear work.
