New Afghan Ministers Sworn In

Afghan President Hamid Karzai (file photo) (epa) May 2, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai today swore in 20 new ministers to Afghanistan's new cabinet, RFE/RL's Afghan Service reports.
Five cabinet posts are still vacant, because the Afghan parliament rejected some of Karzai's recommendations.


It's the first time in post-Taliban Afghanistan that the country has an executive government nominated by the president and approved by parliament.


U.S. President George W. Bush today called Karzai to congratulate him on the formation of the new cabinet, and reiterate the United States' support of reconstruction in Afghanistan.
