May 10, 2006 -- Two Afghan farmers have been killed in clashes with counternarcotics agents destroying opium fields.
Nine police officers were also wounded when shooting broke out on May 9 in the northern province of Sar-e Pol.
Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of opium and its refined form, heroin. Despite government efforts to ban the crop, this year's harvest is expected to be bigger than last year's.
