May 11, 2006 -- Mohammad el-Baradei, head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, has welcomed a move by the UN Security Council to hold off from imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.
At a news conference in Amsterdam today, the International Atomic Energy Agency chief urged compromise on both sides of the nuclear dispute. He also expressed optimism the dispute could be resolved.
On May 10, the United States, which has failed to win Security Council support for UN sanctions against Iran, announced it would give its European allies "a couple of weeks" to devise a plan to persuade Tehran to drop its uranium enrichment activities.
Tehran says it only wants to produce low-grade enriched uranium to use in nuclear reactors, not the highly enriched uranium needed to make bombs.
