Ukraine's Naftohaz Chief Ivchenko Removed

Oleksiy Ivchenko, the outgoing head of Naftohaz (file photo) (epa) May 11, 2006 -- The Ukrainian government has removed the head of the state oil and gas company Naftohaz.

A spokesman said Oleksiy Ivchenko had himself asked to step down following his election to parliament in March.

Ivchenko was a key figure in negotiations over Russian gas supplies in January when Ukraine accepted a nearly twofold increase in prices in a deal criticized by several leading politicians in Kyiv.
