Militants Attack Afghan Girls School

An Afghan student in school in Herat, March 2006 (epa) May 16, 2006 -- Militants threw bombs at two schools in Afghanistan's northern Balkh Province today, wounding a teacher and five students.
Both schools were badly damaged by fire from the bombs. The attack in which the injuries took place was on a girls' class.


In Khost Province, militants attacked a police post, killing two police officers. Two of the attackers were also killed in the fighting.


And the U.S. military reported that four people, who the military identified as "Islamic extremists," were killed in air strike late yesterday in Oruzgan Province.
