Britain Refuses To Extradite Berezovsky

Boris Berezovsky (file photo) (epa) June 6, 2006 -- A British judge has rejected a request to extradite the tycoon Boris Berezovsky to Russia, where he faces charges of planning a coup.

The judge said on June 5 that extradition proceedings would be "futile" as Berezovsky has been granted political asylum in Britain.

A former Kremlin insider, Berezovsky fled Russia in 2000 and has become a vociferous critic of President Vladimir Putin.

Britain has rejected previous Russian requests to extradite Berezovsky to face fraud charges.
