U.S. Marine Commander 'Concerned' Over Al-Hadithah

Hagee said that any Marine found to have violated standards of behavior will be held accountable (AFP) June 7, 2006 -- The commandant of the U.S. Marines says he is "gravely concerned" by allegations of atrocities committed by his troops against Iraqi civilians.
General Michael Hagee made the comments at the Pentagon today in his first public remarks about the allegations concerning reports of Iraqi civilian deaths in the town of Al-Hadithah in November 2005 and in Hamdaniyah two months ago.

Hagee sought to assure the public that any Marine found to have violated standards of behavior will be held accountable. He declined to say what investigators have found thus far, saying investigations are continuing.

Asked at a news conference whether he had considered resigning over the matter, Hagee replied that he serves at "the pleasure of the president" and has not submitted any resignation.
