June 9, 2006 -- Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission today said elections would be held in October in 10 cities and 49 of the country's administrative districts.
Those will be the first such polls ever held in a country where the heads of local administrations, or akims, are traditionally appointed.
President Nursultan Nazarbaev on June 8 decreed that one-third of the country's akims should be elected.
