Curfew Imposed In Baghdad

Baghdad under curfew (file photo) (epa) June 23, 2006 -- The Iraqi government today introduced new emergency security measures in Baghdad, imposing a curfew over the period of Friday prayers.

A suicide attack on a Shi'ite mosque during Friday prayers last week killed 11 people.

In the southern city of Al-Basrah, at least 10 people were reported killed on June 23 in a suicide car bombing near a market and gas station. Al-Basrah has been under a state of emergency since last month.

In separate violence, a U.S. Marine was reported killed in fighting in the western province of Al-Anbar.

In other news, the U.S. military said it had captured a senior Al-Qaeda member and three other suspected terrorists in a series of raids. It said the raids took place June 18 and 19 outside the city of Ba'qubah.
