June 30, 2006 -- The chief executive of Russia's Gazprom says the state-controlled company aims to become the world's largest energy firm by expanding its gas and oil operations in the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere.
Aleksei Miller said Gazprom would fulfill its obligations to Western Europe, but would also focus on China, India, and South Korea.
Gazprom controls the world's biggest gas reserves but has been slow in developing new fields and infrastructure.
